- Avoid fad diets: Fad diets may work short term but not long term. They may offer a quick fix, but they won't have lasting results.
- Follow an eating plan that you will be able to stick with for life. Changing your diet from a fast food, high simple carbohydrate, high fat diet to a healthy food (lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins), complex carbohydrate, low fat diet doesn't have to be difficult. Making simple changes, a few things at a time can make a huge difference.
- Make sure you are active: Weight gain comes from eating more calories than you are burning up. If you begin to move more, become more active, and yes- follow an exercise program - you will begin to burn more calories. When you exercise, your body continues to burn calories at a higher rate for hours after you are done.
- Drink water: When you drink water, you are helping your body have the fuel it needs to burn fat. Water is also filling, and drinking a glass of water before a meal will make it easier to eat less.
- Make a new motto for yourself: 'Eat to live, not live to eat!', or 'Being a Loser makes me a winner!' or anything else that will inspire you to keep on going.
- Give yourself nonfood rewards. When you have lost a certain amount, say 10 percent, treat yourself to a movie, a manicure, or anything else that you can pamper yourself with.
