Body Fat Loss

Measuring body fat can be a scary thing, especially if you have had a problem with your weight. When you find out that you are in the obese category, looking into ways to accomplish body fat loss may be the first thing you want to do. First, though, you need to understand how body fat is measured and why it's important in your overall health.

Body fat is measured both by how much you weigh for your height, or finding your BMI (Body Mass Index). Your BMI is determined by converting your weight into kilograms (one kilogram=2.2 pounds) and your height into meters squared (a meter is 3.28 feet). You then divide your weight by your height. You can also visit a BMI calculator online and put in your height and weight in pounds, feet and inches, and it will measure for you.

Some people measure overweight or obese, even if they aren't. Mostly athletes, weightlifters, and other very muscular people may measure wrong, but generally the BMI calculators are pretty accurate. If you measure into the overweight or obese category, don't panic. Take a deep breath and come up with a plan.

Body fat loss is possible and will be accomplished if you enter a plan with determination and a goal that is reasonable. Making the goal of losing 10 percent of your body weight is generally looked on as a good first goal. Programs like Weight Watchers are known for making small, yet reasonable goals such as this. When you make small goals, you are more likely to stick with whatever plan you choose, and not get overwhelmed.

There are many dieting plans available, and you can look most of them up online for free. When you decide what kind of eating plan you can follow comfortably, and be happy with, you will want to set a date to begin. Setting a date to begin will help you prepare yourself emotionally, and physically for eating a healthier diet.

Next, you need to decide about what kind of exercise plan you will follow. Many people have a hard time getting out, going to a gym, or participating in a sport. There are many options of how and when to exercise. Walking is probably the easiest for most people, as well as the least expensive way to begin. All you need is a pair of walking shoes or sneakers, and a half hour of time. Walking for at least a half hour a day will help get you moving and increase your circulation and your heart rate enough to benefit your health. Whatever exercise plan you begin with, make sure it's something you can stick with and get excited about.

Deciding to attempt body fat loss is a big decision and can add years to your life. When you lose body fat, build muscle, and become overall healthier, not only will you live longer, you will be in better health than you would have, to enjoy life more. With body fat loss, you can have a better quality of life and a higher quantity of life - the best of both.
